Work in Beauty, Inc. is a non-profit in Gallup, NM that supports creating environmental, ecological, and conservation-oriented jobs and livelihoods. Right now, our focus is helping the community develop more self-sufficient, sustainable, and healthy food systems.

The Work in Beauty CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) buys produce from local growers and distributes it weekly to paying subscribers. Any excess produce, we donate to local non-profits that work with under-served populations.

As independent small business owners, our growers both own and lease land in the Gallup area to grow produce. To develop and support Gallup’s growers, WIB runs a demonstration garden on Logan Avenue, provides educational workshops, and loans equipment to participating growers.

Work in Beauty, Inc. was founded by muralist and activist, Be Sargent. Several years ago she saved a productive garden from being paved over when the land changed ownership. She sponsored the Demonstration Garden and helped relocate the old garden to her expansive back yard on Puerco and Logan in Gallup. The CSA began with 15 members in 2007 and has sustained itself for four seasons.

In 2012 we expect to continue to expand the growing spaces and extend the season. Look for the effects of our digging forks in several backyards throughout downtown as well as a few outlying plots. Contact us if you have a nearby space you want worked into veggies and we’ll try to match you with a grower who needs the space.

We believe there is strength in the diversity of location and size of plots for growing veggies.

Our growers carefully select vegetable varieties to thrive in our high-elevation climate without the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides.
