Work in Beauty, Inc. is a non-profit organization formed to create jobs that sustain, heal and harmonize with the environment.

Our primary project, the Work in Beauty CSA (Community Supported Agriculture), provides local produce to paying members on a weekly basis. CSA members receive fresh vegetables every Saturday throughout three growing seasons: spring, summer and late summer from gardens on the north side, downtown, Chihuahuita, 491 North and the west side.

In its first three years the CSA was a volunteer organization. All monies went towards building the gardens. This year, our fourth, we buy vegetables from the local growers pictured below and distribute their produce to our members.

To make growing for the CSA a full time job depends upon the response of the community. If all of Gallup depended upon local food production, many full time jobs would be created. As the real costs of transportation, handling, packaging and refrigeration are reflected in the price of food on the grocery store shelf, buying and selling produce locally will be more feasible and sensible. Our method of handing you a box of veggies each Saturday may become the cheaper route.

As demonstrated by the lack of anyone updating our blog as of late – the season is now in full swing and harvest begins for us this Saturday! This note is just to notify anyone interested in partaking that our last meeting before the harvest season begins is planned for Tuesday, July 6th at 7 pm at 113 E. Logan Ave. Any and all are welcome to attend – we will be planning for the market and organizing a summer kick-off potluck! (All of which will be described and announced online here beforehand as well.) Stay tuned and get ready for fresh veggies…!

The CSA is getting into full swing with our planting; tilling, irrigation and starts are making their way into our designated backyards and we are meeting again! Spring starts are beginning to pop from green house trays and CSA planning meetings have begun for the upcoming season. We’re well on our way into September here, rains have finally kicked in, and the growing is good. Before we all start worrying about how long we can ward off frost, let’s take a moment to appreciate how beautiful the CSA full harvest is. Potluck anyone? Please check out my page of recipes.

Planting Onions 2009

Two weeks later than planned, we are putting onion and leek starts in prepared beds at Be’s. When spring comes early and suddenly it is hard to keep up with it and with the huge amount of preparation that goes into each season. Yet we are aiming for a big first harvest in July and even greater diversity each week throughout the season.
